Harden, Sun Devils outlast UCLA in Pac-10 battle

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/12/2009 - Tempe, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - James Harden finished with 15 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds, as 18th-ranked Arizona State pulled out a 74-67 win over No. 11 UCLA, sweeping the Bruins in the season series.

Derek Glasser also had 15 points for Arizona State, including a key three- pointer late in the game. Rihards Kuksiks and Jeff Pendergraph each ended with 14 points for the Sun Devils (19-5, 8-4 Pac-10), who also beat UCLA on January 17, in a 61-58 overtime thriller. ASU won its third in a row overall -- its longest win streak in conference play this season.

Pendergraph also brought down nine rebounds and Harden turned the ball over eight times, while Ty Abbott had 12 points for ASU. The Sun Devils shot 60 percent from the floor overall, and made 11-of-18 three-point attempts on the way to the win.

Josh Shipp had 16 points to pace UCLA (19-5, 8-3), which had a four-game win streak snapped. Michael Roll and Darren Collison each added 15 points for the Bruins.

In a back-and-forth second half, Collison and Alfred Aboya had back-to-back baskets to put the Bruins ahead 65-64 heading into the final four minutes. Glasser then put ASU back on top with a pair of free throws after being fouled on a floor-length drive.

Collison had a chance to get UCLA ahead by more than a point with 2:37 on the clock, as he drove for a basket and was fouled. But Collison, who entered Thursday's game having made 93.7 percent of his free throws, missed the shot and the Sun Devils collected the rebound.

Pendergraph missed a dunk on the other end, but ASU got the ball back after UCLA's Jrue Holiday airballed a long three as the shot clock expired, keeping the Bruins' lead at 67-66.

Glasser then drilled a three from the right corner with 1:16 left for a two- point Sun Devils lead, and Collison committed a foul on the other end. But it was Aboya's costly foul moments later that sealed UCLA's fate.

Arizona State called a timeout with 36.3 left, and prior to the ensuing inbound pass actually being thrown, Aboya touched the inbounder -- a technical foul. Glasser made two free throws for a 71-67 lead, Pendergraph followed with a dunk, and the Sun Devils held on for the win from there.

An eight-point burst early in the first half gave Arizona State a double-digit lead. Kuksiks had five points in the run, including a jumper to end it for a 19-8 advantage.

But a five-point burst by UCLA, capped by a Collison jumper, got the Bruins within 26-20 with 6 1/2 minutes left in the half. UCLA later went on a 10-0 run to even the game at 30, and Roll's three in the waning seconds knotted the contest at 35-35 heading to the intermission.

The contest was back-and-forth throughout the second half, and two free throws from Harden and a Pendergraph dunk gave ASU a 64-61 edge with 5 1/2 minutes to play.

Game Notes

Aboya had eight points...The Bruins made 49 percent of their field goal attempts, and went 8-for-18 from beyond the arc...Arizona State out-rebounded UCLA, 26-20...UCLA had won the last four matchups in Tempe. Despite the loss, the Bruins still own a 23-9 lead all-time in games at Arizona State.
